Avocado oil is the newest entrant in the "better than olive oil" marketing wars — it has real strengths, but the case for replacing a good extra virgin olive oil entirely is weaker than the marketing suggests.

Where avocado oil genuinely wins

Where olive oil still leads

Verdict: avocado oil is a legitimate high-heat option, not a proven upgrade over a genuinely good extra virgin olive oil for everyday use.

The adulteration problem is arguably worse for avocado oil

Independent US testing of avocado oil in recent years has found a majority of tested retail samples mislabeled, oxidized, or diluted with cheaper oils — a rate at least comparable to, and in some analyses worse than, olive oil's own documented fraud problem discussed in Why Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fraud Is So Common. Avocado oil is newer to mass retail and has less-established independent competition and testing infrastructure behind it than olive oil does, which makes verifying any individual bottle harder in practice.

Where the two are nutritionally almost identical

Fatty-acid profile is genuinely a near-draw: both are dominated by monounsaturated fat, with broadly similar cardiovascular implications. The meaningful differences are everything around the fat — price, verification, flavor range, and research base — not the fat itself. See Olive Oil vs Coconut Oil for a comparison where the fat profile itself is the actual differentiator.
