That's USDA FoodData Central's figure, and it holds across refined, virgin and extra virgin grades — all are close enough to pure fat that grade doesn't meaningfully change the calorie count. What differs between grades isn't calories; it's everything else — polyphenols, flavor, processing.

Why "fattening" is the wrong frame

Calorie-dense isn't the same as fattening. Weight gain comes from a sustained calorie surplus, not from any single ingredient in isolation — and the best available evidence on olive oil specifically points the other way. The PREDIMED trial, one of the largest dietary intervention studies ever run, followed over 7,400 participants at high cardiovascular risk on a Mediterranean diet supplemented with roughly four tablespoons (50ml) of extra virgin olive oil daily. They didn't gain weight relative to a low-fat control diet — while seeing a 31% reduction in combined heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death, a result summarized in the Wiki Journal Club's PREDIMED overview. The context that matters: participants were largely using olive oil to replace other fats (butter, refined oils), not adding it on top of an otherwise unchanged diet.

The practical rule: olive oil is "fattening" the same way any fat is — if it's added on top of your normal intake with no adjustment elsewhere. Used to replace a less healthy fat, the calorie math is roughly a wash and the health case tips clearly in its favor.

The downsides that are actually real

Calorie density genuinely is the main one worth being deliberate about — it's easy to pour several tablespoons over a salad or into a pan without registering that you've added 350–450 calories. Cost per calorie is another: a genuinely high-polyphenol extra virgin oil, tested and verified like Musai's October 2025 harvest at 972 mg/kg total polyphenols, costs meaningfully more than a bottle of refined vegetable oil, gram for gram. How it compares to other cooking oils

There isn't one single "worst" oil for health — the clearest, most consistently cited problem is oil that's been reused and reheated repeatedly at high temperatures, which degrades and forms harmful compounds regardless of what oil it started as. Where extra virgin olive oil has a genuine, well-documented edge over heavily refined seed and vegetable oils isn't a head-to-head "unhealthy oil" comparison — it's the polyphenol content that industrial refining strips out of almost everything else. A sensible daily amount

Most of the research behind olive oil's cardiovascular benefits, PREDIMED included, uses roughly 2 to 4 tablespoons (20–50ml) a day as the effective range — not a "more is automatically better" relationship. For most people that's a realistic amount to get from normal cooking and dressing use without any special effort, and it lines up with getting real benefit rather than just adding calories for their own sake.
